TESTS

The Theory Test for Car Drivers and Motorcyclists was introduced in July 1996. It is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified riders and drivers by making them think carefully about the right attitudes needed to drive safely on today's busy roads.
Areas of assessment include:

  • Driver attitude
  • Traffic signs and regulations
  • Effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on driver behaviour
  • Safety and environmental aspects of vehicles.

Part One

The test consists of 35 multiple choice questions. To pass you need to answer at least 30 questions correctly. You are allowed 40 minutes to complete the test. The test is taken using a touch screen computer.

Part Two

The electronic test is taken in front of a normal computer monitor. You will watch a series of video clips, each about a minute long, filmed on all sorts of roads, from country lanes to suburban high streets to motorways.

Each clip will contain one or more developing hazards. Candidates need to click the mouse button as soon as they see a hazard. You will be asked to indicate as soon as you see a hazard developing which may result in the driver taking some action, such as changing speed or direction. The sooner a response is made the higher the score.

There will be 14 different moving scenes on the Hazard Perception test screen. One scene will have two hazards to identify. The 14 scenes will be taken from a bank of 200. You will have to identify the moving hazard by clicking a mouse. For example, a car pulling out in front of you. You will be given a 'window of time' in which to spot the hazard. The score will depend on how soon you identify the hazard - the longer you take, the lower your score. You will score a zero mark if you either click too late, or repeatedly.

You must take both parts of your theory test in one sitting before you can apply for a practical car test!!

Preparing for your Theory Test.

To make sure you are ready study the Highway Code, The DSA Driving Skills book (formally known as the Driving Manual), The DSA official Theory Test book. One of the best ways is to use a CD-ROM containing all of the questions that we will give you FREE.

The Price

The cost of the test is £21.50 and can be booked by calling 0870-01-01-372 when you hear the automated menu dial **112 to be connected straight to a theory test booking operative.

PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST

The practical driving test will last about 40 minutes and will cover a wide variety of roads including dual carriageways (where available), town centre, rural roads and villages depending on location of the test centre.

You will be asked to complete 2 manoeuvres. These will selected out of the following:

  • Reverse around a corner
  • Parallel Parking
  • Reverse parking into a space at the beginning or end of the test
  • Turn-in-the-road.

You will be asked to "follow the road ahead, unless road signs or markings tell you otherwise". Most examiners will keep quiet. This is not to intimidate you, but to allow you to concentrate fully on the task.

At the end of your test your examiner will tell you whether you have passed or failed. If you have failed you will be asked whether you wish to be told the reasons and if you would like your instructor to listen in on the feedback. This is very helpful even though you may not feel like listening to all your faults as it will help you and your instructor to identify the areas which need to be reviewed before your next test.

If you do pass your test you will subject to a TWO YEAR PROBATIONARY PERIOD. This means that you must not have more than 5 penalty points on your licence. If you get more than 5 points you will revert to provisional licence status and have to drive with L-Plates and re-take the theory and driving test again before you can drive unaccompanied..

At the start of each test Car and Motorcycle candidates will be asked to demonstrate how to carry out basic vehicle or machine checks. The areas will include:

  • Brakes
  • Lights
  • Fluids
  • Tyres
  • Reflectors

Example of Questions you might be asked at the start of your test

  • Would you identify where you would check the oil level and explain how to check that you have sufficient oil?
  • Show me how you would check that your headlights and taillights are working?
  • Show me how you would check that your direction indicators are working?
  • Explain what checks you would make on the tyres before starting a journey?
  • Show me how you would check that the power assisted steering is working?
  • Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and explain how you would check that you have sufficient fluid?
